“International workshop on Biobanking for Rare Diseases”

Biobanks are repositories of sample and data that provide invaluable resources to both researchers and clinicians from a wide range of fields, including RDs. Access to biological materials and associated analytical and medical data is a prerequisite and a bottleneck for scientific research, particularly in RDs. RD biobanks play a pivotal role by maximizing access to precious samples between researchers in the international scientific community. Therefore, they are crucial for transnational efforts that aim to tackle a major health problem. Effective sharing and reusability of such unique samples require adherence to high-quality standards, harmonized standard operational procedures (SOPs) and searchable sample catalogs. This workshop will address these key aspects of RD biobanking. The topics will include principles of RD biobanking, how to establish a biobank for RDs, ethical concepts, quality management system, data and database management and security. Following the presentations by experts in the first day of the workshop, a problem-based tutorial section that will be focused on the challenges in RD biobanking and a hands-on training will be provided to participants on the second day.

This workshop is co-funded by a European Commission H2020 project, ADOPT BBMRI-ERIC under grant nr 676550. RD are a major item on the agenda for BBMRI-ERIC and collaboration beyond Europe is a must!
