The project STEM-CORE, in which our researcher Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinan Güven from the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center participates as a consortium member has been selected for funding under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the European Commission.
Damage, infections, or genetic disorders affecting the cornea can lead to the loss of limbal stem cell function, resulting in permanent vision loss. Existing treatment options for these conditions are limited and often not economically accessible. STEM-CORE (Stem Cell Therapy Development for Corneal Epithelium Regeneration) aims to address this challenge by developing innovative treatments through induced stem cell technologies and advanced biomedical approaches.
Another major goal of STEM-CORE is to train 14 PhD researchers through collaboration among 12 academic and industrial institutions across Europe. Within this framework, an international PhD student hosted at the Izmir International Biomedicine and Genome Institute of Dokuz Eylül University will gain comprehensive experience — from laboratory research to clinical applications — while developing critical skills in research, communication, ethics, and entrepreneurship.
The project’s consortium partners include Dokuz Eylül University, SBMatrices BV, Utrecht University, Stichting Oogfonds Nederland, Eötvös Loránd University, Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Paris-Saclay University.
